Prevalence of Autism Estimated at More Than 1% of All Children

autism ribbon sized.thumbnail Last week, President Obama paid a visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where he announced $5 billion in grants to fund new explorations of long-time biomedical research targets from cancer to heart disease. The grants also include the largest-ever investment in an area that the President has made a focus from the first days of his presidency—autism research. Altogether, the federal government will provide nearly twice as much funding for autism research in the upcoming fiscal year as they did just three years ago. And it appears this increased funding couldn’t have come at a better time, especially in light of a new government study that suggests autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have nearly doubled since the last survey conducted in 2003.

They did so to allow supporters and advocates a specific time frame to bring their concerns to light. Educating the public about mental health is an important part of acceptance and benefits those who are not only currently in treatment, but can also encourage others to seek out help for their own benefit.

Flu Virus Can Raise Risk of Heart Attack Among Heart Patients

Stress Among General Surgery Residents In The United States

image1 A study by the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Public Health published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association reports that the majority of general surgery residents in the United States say they are satisfied with their training and confident of their ability to perform. However, a significant number believe that the hours and stress are straining their family life. In addition, many express uncertainties about future income and career prospects.

Final FDA Approval for H1N1 Vaccine Is Granted

thumbnail.inline Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave final approval to four vaccines developed to fight the H1N1 influenza virus. The four drugmakers granted approval are CSL Ltd, MedImmune LLC, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Ltd, and Sanofi Pasteur Inc. It is expected that the vaccines will be available for shipment within one month.
